UK Nuclear Industry 55 Years Behind Calculated National Average on Gender Pay Gap, New Report Reveals

A new industry-wide Gender Pay Gap (GPG) report published by Inclusion and Diversity in Nuclear (IDN) reveals that, if current trends continue, it will take the UK nuclear industry 55 years to close the gap to the current calculated national average.

This marks the first aggregated analysis of data from 113 nuclear companies spanning the years 2017 to 2025.

Key findings:

  • 60–70% of women are concentrated in the lowest pay quartiles
  • The gender pay gap in nuclear remains significantly above national averages
  • Women make up only 28 percent of the nuclear workforce compared to 51.4 percent nationally

Monica Mwanje, Managing Director of IDN, commented:
“This report confirms what many suspected: gender disparity in pay is deeply structural in our sector. If we want to retain skilled talent and create a more sustainable future, the industry must address this inequality now, not in five decades.”

The report’s release is designed to inform and energise stakeholders ahead of the IDN Pay Gap Conference, taking place in February 2026.
